Broadening Horizons 4 is an International Congress dedicated to early-stage researchers and postgraduate students who deal with several disciplines of the Ancient Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The general aim of the conference is to encourage discussions on new topics and to promote the exchange of scientific information among students and scholars of many different specialties – archaeology, prehistory, history, anthropology, archaeobiology, philology – of the Ancient Near East.

The 4th edition of the congress will be held in Turin (Italy) from the 25th to the 28th of October 2011 in the conference room of the Biblioteca “Arturo Graf” della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, at “Rettorato dell’Università degli Studi di Torino”, via Po 17.

The Turin edition follows the similar direction as the previous editions which took place at the Ghent University (Belgium) in 2006, at the Université Lyon 2 (France) in 2007 and at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) in 2010.

It is addressed to young researchers, and young researchers are actively involved with the congress organisation.

The goals of the conference are:

• Stimulating the presentation and the discussion of new research and common problems in the field, within an interdisciplinary and international framework.

• Encouraging debate and dialogue among early-stage researchers who are working in similar fields and who share similar issues.

• Promoting the presentation of data and preliminary results, which can be used to combine and compare different disciplines and working dynamics.

Geographical Area

The geographical area considered in this symposium is the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. Starting from this edition, it has been decided to broaden the geographical horizons eastwards, including the area of Central Asia.

• Socio-economic reconstruction of ancient societies based on archaeological, historical or environmental records
• Settlement patterns and exchange networks
• Application of new technologies in archaeological research.

Participants

The conference is mainly dedicated to early career researchers, MA students, PhD students and Post-Docs. The different sessions should be seen as a useful environment to discuss opinions and share knowledge.
